Key Considerations When Buying an Outboard Motor

With so many models and styles of outboard motors available, its best to think about your needs well before you start looking around, so that you get exactly what you need. Some things to think about in advance, include:

Horsepower (HP). The recommended horsepower range varies for each boat, as does intended use.

Two or Four Stroke. Portable outboards (2-30HP) are moving towards four strokes only. These motors are quieter and more fuel efficient, however require more maintenance.

Weight. Most boaters will move their small outboards easily around. Make sure you can comfortably handle what you purchase and use a cart, when possible, to save your back.

Warranty. What is the length of the warranty on the boat you are considering?

Service and Storage. Scheduled maintenance keeps your outboard reliable, make sure to consult the manufacturers recommendations just like you would a car or boat.
